hopefully i found how to stop apple mail from crashing...
i am not sure what the heck happened on Friday but all through the day and over this weekend. mail.app just kept crashing over and over. i rebooted, i tried fix permissions, rebuilt the envelope file and some other odds and ends.
my version of mac osx = 10.5.6
my version of mail = 3.5 (930)
after scouring various apple sites and related forums i found this link:

after the install mails version switched to = 3.5 (930.3) it also hasnt appeared to crash yet. so i have my fingers crossed.
